The game is due on the anniversary of waterloo in 2015 so whatever they have finished by then will be in game. They are hoping if they succeed with this zoom out style map that you will be able to play all of the battles surrounding waterloo and waterloo on your own terms with whatever forces you actually manage to get there. They have something in mind along the lines of NATO style symbols for this. But they mention a sandbox mode that lets you zoom out to a campaign map that IS NOT abstracted like total war. I am half way through the SOW waterloo interview. The interface also drove me nuts just like the combat mission normandy interface did. The scale is 1:1 though right and uses 3d models where scourge of war uses sprites? The villages look like they sprouted from a perfectly flat field. The cavalry especially look like they need a feed.

If you want to play multiplayer, most MP games use the GCM mod.Īnd for singleplayer, there's a list of mods here, plus the GCM singleplayer campaign mod. Some of the same people have played battles every night for 3.5 years since it was released, and it hasn't gotten old. No repetitive hammer-anvil strategy like in Total War. It's really replay-able, partly because of the random maps and scenarios, and partly because the gameplay is really good and very focused on the battlefield terrain, so every situation you find yourself in is really unique. The rest you can learn slowly, and even people who have played for years don't use all of the detailed stuff. (Figuring out what terrain to hold, when to fall back, which flank to attack on, which road to take, etc.) There are a lot of possible commands you can give in the game, but as a new player you can stick to just the basics, simply placing your regiments where you want them in line and you'll be 90% of the way there. Especially when commanding one brigade in a large MP battle, most of the "effort" of playing is discussing with your team to figure out what to do, not actually the clicking to do it. Of course in a battle it can be competitive, but it definitely is a more friendly competitive atmosphere than most multiplayer experiences, because the community is small (~30 people playing each day out of a total of a few hundred), so everyone plays with and against everyone else over and over.Īlthough the user interface isn't as nice as Total War, the basic controls necessary are not too complicated. This seems to work well, there are always new guys playing and almost everyone is friendly and helpful. So the experienced players never gang up on the newbies and everyone learns from each other. In multiplayer, we have a system for automatically setting up random scenarios that makes sure new or inexperienced players have only a few regiments and are on a team with more experienced players who can help them out. How much of a learning curve is there with SOW for new players? And do you have a link to mods for the game? Thanks!I play multiplayer. (Shameless plug for this little-known game and MP community.) With all the Napoleonic uniforms it's going to look great. Here's what the civil war game looks like now - note this is a tiny portion of a massive multiplayer battle. This will be the perfect battle engine for a Napoleonic strategic MMO. The current game also provides support for third party campaign systems / scenario generators / random maps / etc, so I expect that will remain.

There is already a Napoleonic mod for the civil war engine, but SOW Waterloo will probably support unique Napoleonic gameplay much better. Note that Scourge of War Gettysburg is currently on sale for $20.Īlso, if you're not familiar with the Scourge of War series, they make their games extremely mod-friendly. I'm sure Waterloo will only be an improvement. This is much larger scale than Total War games, with much more realistic tactics. Scourge of War Gettysburg has been played with up to 22 players in multiplayer with 80,000 troops on 5x5 mile maps. This will be the best Napoleonic real time tactical battle game when it comes out.
